Frequently asked car insurance questions

How long does a child need a car seat?

In Ireland, it's a legal requirement for your children to be seated in a car seat that is suitable for their age, height, and weight until they either reach 150cm (4’11”) in height or 36kg (approx. 79 lbs) in weight.

This typically means children will need a car seat until they are around 12 years old. Taxis are an exception to the rule.

Failing to do so not only puts your child's safety at risk but can also result in penalties, including fines and points on your driving licence.

Can a child wear a coat in a car seat?

No, a child should not wear a coat in a car seat. Coats can compress in a crash, creating extra space under the harness and potentially allowing the child to be ejected or sustain injuries. Instead, use thin layers and blankets to keep the child warm, ensuring the harness straps fit snugly against the child's body.

How to stop a child opening car seat buckle?

The best thing to do is to be patient with your child and try not to be in a rush. If you persuade your child that the car won’t go or will stop if the buckle is open, this might help stop them doing it.

What age can child travel in the front seat of a car?

There is no law against children sitting in the front seat, as long as they are using the right child restraint for their height and weight. Children under 150cm in height or 36kg in weight must use a child restraint system, such as a car seat or booster seat.
