Why do you need home insurance?

Home insurance (also known as house insurance) covers your home and/or possessions from damage or loss due to things like fires, flooding, storms, and theft. You are not legally obliged to take out home and contents insurance, but if you have a mortgage, your lender can insist that you have buildings insurance. This will ensure you are covered for rebuild costs if your home is destroyed, for example in a fire. Even if you don’t have a mortgage as you own your home outright, home insurance will protect you financially in the event of burglary, fire or other damage.

Underinsurance occurs when a home is insured for less than the replacement value. This could occur by simply electing for the incorrect value of your home. However this can also occur due to inflation where costs rise overtime and properties are valued more overtime. Please read more details on Underinsurance here.

Frequently asked home insurance questions
What is accidental damage cover?

At OUTsurance, accidental damage cover is available as an optional extra. By selecting this cover, you will be covered for accidental damage to the property you have insured with us. Examples of accidental cover include:

For contents:

  • If you are spring cleaning and moving your TV and by accident drop it.

Building:

  • If you accidentally break the glass of a door or large window.

To avail of this cover you will need to select the optional extra and it will appear on your policy schedule.

What is sum insured?

The sum insured is the maximum amount payable in the event of a claim. Depending on the level of cover you have chosen, you will need to specify a sum insured for your:

  • Contents
  • Buildings
  • Portable items

For contents your sum insured is the total replacement cost of the contents inside your home. This should include items like your couch, beds, curtain, carpets and clothing for example.

For buildings, the sum insured is the total rebuild cost of your home. When calculating your building sum insured it is important to consider things like:

  • Permanent fittings like wooden floors or kitchens and bathroom sanitary fittings
  • Demolition and clean up costs
  • Rebuilding paths, driveways, patios, fences, boundary walls and decking
  • Professional fees such as architects, engineers, surveyors, plumbers etc.

You can use the following calculator as a guide to your rebuild cost.

Please note, your rebuild cost is not the market value for which you would sell your house. This value takes into consideration market trends and the land.

Do I get liability cover?

Yes, you are covered for up to €3 million if you take our home insurance.

If you hold buildings insurance, we will cover you for any amount that you may be legally liable to pay as owner of the premises. Examples include:

  • Death or accidental bodily injury to any person other than You, any Household member(s) or Domestic Employee/s
  • Accidental Damage to property other than property belonging to or under the control of You, Household member(s) or Domestic Employee/s

For more information, please see our Home policy booklet.

What do you class as a high valued item, and what do I need to specify on my policy?

Any items valued at over €2500 should be noted on the policy. Our skilled agents will gladly assist and ensure your items are noted accordingly.

Is a fitted kitchen covered under Building Insurance?

A fitted kitchen is part of the immovable property at the home, and thus falls under Buildings Insurance cover.

Are my personal belongings covered outside of the house?

To avail of cover for personal belongings outside of the home, you will need to select the optional portable items cover. If you have selected this cover it will appear on your schedule. We offer unspecified cover for items under €1000 and items over €1000 will need to be noted seperately on the policy schedule.

How does an insurance excess work?

An insurance excess refers to the amount of money that you, as the policyholder, agree to pay towards the cost of a claim. For example, where a claim has a total cost of €1000 and your excess is €250, you will pay the excess and your insurer will pay €750. This is a standard practice in insurance and is designed to share the financial responsibility between you and your insurer. For details on the excesses applicable under your policy, please refer to your schedule.

Are the contents of my shed or garage covered, such as a lawnmower or tools?

The contents in your shed or garage is covered, however this is limited to 10% of your contents sum insured.

Is my garden furniture covered?

We provide garden and leisure equipment cover as an optional cover that is available for you to select. This will provide cover against loss or damage to, for example, garden furniture, barbeque equipment, pool cleaning equipment and trampolines.

The maximum amount that will be paid out in the event of a claim is €1000.

What is Underinsurance?

Underinsurance occurs when a home is insured for less than the replacement value. This could occur by simply electing for the incorrect value of your home. However this can also occur due to inflation where costs rise overtime and property's are valued more overtime.

For example, if a property's replacement value is €100,000 and it is only insured for €80,000. Then the property is underinsured by 20%. This would result in claims being paid proportionally. Should your house be a total loss and require a total rebuild then the most you will receive is €80,000.

Should there be a claim for €10,000, then 80% of the claim will be entertained and a max of €8,000 will be paid.

Should you have any queries regarding underinsurance, please contact us for assistance or read more details on Underinsurance here.

What is the OUTbonus?
