The bank holiday weekend is a great excuse to pack up the car and drive off with the family. Before you go have a read through our top tips for driving this August Bank Holiday.
1. Plan your route in advance
Particularly if you are travelling somewhere new, research where you're going and how best to get there. Check for, events or delays ahead of time to avoid getting lost or stuck in heavy traffic.
Remember, fatigue is one of the most common causes of road accidents. A good night’s sleep before a long drive is a great way to start your long weekend right and protect other road users.
Before hitting the road, check your tyres for correct pressure and treading, be sure your coolant levels are topped up and that all lights and indicators are functioning for your long journey ahead.
As we all know in Ireland it’s common to have all four seasons in one day, so even if it’s looking like clear sky's, check your windscreen wiper blades are functioning well and that there’s no wear and tear or splitting.
Check in with your car insurance provider to see if you have emergency roadside assistance as the last thing you want on your weekend road trip is to be stranded.
Include items like a reflective vest, warning triangle, flashlight, phone charger, first aid kit and water in case of a breakdown or other emergency.
If possible, travel outside of peak times to avoid traffic jams. Roads tend to be busiest on Friday afternoon and Monday evening. A little flexibility can save hours of frustration – an early start on Saturday could make all the difference.
While we all wish our bank holidays came with guaranteed sunshine, we have to be prepared for all conditions. If it's wet make sure to stay a safe distance from the car in front; if it's sunny, be aware of sun glare.
If you've ever taken a long drive with little ones, you’ll know that keeping them entertained is the secret to avoiding that constant chorus of “Are we there yet?”
Games like Eye Spy, Spot the Car, Number Plate Game, or if you’re more adventurous, car karaoke. Or, if screens are your saving grace, tablet holders on the back of the front seats can let Peppa Pig work her magic while you focus on the road.
Driving while tired or hungry can impair focus. Stop every two hours or whenever you feel you need to for a short rest, stretch your legs and have a bite to eat.
Speed limits vary depending on road type and conditions. Keep in mind that speed limit changes came into effect in February 2025 changing many rural roads from 80km/h to 60km/h. Make sure you're aware of the limits and adjust your speed accordingly, especially in unfamiliar areas.
We hope our top drivers' tips come in handy! Remember to enjoy the experience and if you’re not the one behind the wheel, soak in the views and all the memories. Happy Bank Holiday weekend folks we hope it’s one to remember.
